Sunken Bookshop

Oxford, Oxfordshire

To wander into this place, is for me every time of over 30 years doing so, still a hugely impressive dug out.

Scooped out from the earthy ground of Trinity College’s Library Quad, the makers of this old bookstore fused a wonderful space for learning within the sunken centre of another great place for reading. A perfect marriage.

Sunken Bookshop

The beauty of this tiered palace of books is that you’d never know it was even there, from any which way it’s approached. One moment you are stepping through the door to one of three medieval town houses, into a bookshop of sumptuous covers, wall to wall shelving, a public library up for sale.

Once inside, a flight of stairs descends to another realm, a vast room filled with bound paper, freed from the close walls of ancient stonework, a bright mid 20th century sunken treasure erupts.
