Sounding Arch

Taplow, Buckinghamshire

Many Rivers to Cross. Thanks Jimmy.

A bridge like no other. Brunel’s masterpiece? Well, I for one certainly think so.

Actually; of course there are other impressive structures which bear his mark, but the sheer boldness of Isambard Kingdom Brunel (couple of great choice names there) on this particular venture pips it for me.

The longest brick span arch in the (whole-wide) world. So the story goes, its temporary wooden frame duly left in situ back in the day. First set up to help with its construction, but as one too many feared the bridge would fall within months of completion. One night a blustery gale blew down the protective frame, but the bridge remained.

Pushing 200 summers.

The Great Western Railway by J. M. W. Turner.

With over engineering as solid as this, getting stuck into the everyday 21st century, 200+ trains a day. What an astonishing thought.
