Milestone

Bishop’s Sutton, Hampshire

Just outside of Alresford, a solitary milestone tells the weary traveler just how far they’ve come and more importantly, how far they still have to go.

As autumn’s leaves begin to make way spring’s steady rise, i snapped pic before winter’s debris is blown away in just a few days by the Ides of March.

Whether in driving the car orgazing as a passenger, I’m quick to spot these markers beside our roads, denoting that not too long ago these were new Turnpikes, the toll roads of their day. These milestones were the first to set into the ground for over 1000 years since the Romans fuse tired it themselves to mark the distances - their mile not being the same as the one we now use.

Part of the fun for me when travelling is looking it for things like this, it’s what makes the journey all the more enjoyable.
