
Humble. Low church. Puritan.
Just a few words that leap to my mind when in the presence of this space. The English Protestant movement of the 16th and 17th centuries doesn’t get much more sombre, stripped back, whitewashed, low key, than this small Thames-side church - save for the removal of the pews. An extravagance by the standards of this excused the church of its former wall paintings and decoration.

But even those who did not wish to worship papist false saints preferred to sit rather than stand it seems.
