Bones

Winchester, Hampshire

An unreachable chest, perched precariously on a high wall.

“What’s contained within?” a meek voice asks amongst a bigger group. “A bunch of bones” the guide quietly spills.

These fragments of people, scattered during the English civil war. Quietly gathered up by locals after the dust and muskets had settled, placed into 6 coffin sized chests, a jigsaw puzzle waiting to be completed.

For hundreds of years, these bones, those of Kings, Queens, Bishops and others unknown now live side by side, the modern world levelling out the hierarchy of a feudal time. There’s something amusing about this rather cramped humbling situation that brings me a wry smile, one which would no doubt see Queen Emma and King Cnut turning in their graves, but if only they had one.
